Shashikala Saigal
Shashikala Saigal (birthname Shashikala Jawalkar ) was a famous character actress in hindi films mainly doing the negative or vamp roles . She worked from 1944 to 2006 that is for about long 60 years .
She was born in a Marathi hindu family on 4.8.1932 at Solapur, Maharashtra
By the age of 5, she had already been dancing, singing and acting on stage in many towns in Solapur district. They were six siblings and her father on becoming bankrupt shifted to bombay for search of work for himself and little shashkala in films . Little shashikala started earning small anounts by visiting one studio to another .
She finally got a break in film jugnu 1947 in a side roll . She again worked in film Arzoo 1950 . She kept struggling and first rose to fame with her role in film Pugdi पगड़ी ( 1948) and in in V. Shantaram’s film Teen Batti Char Raasta (1953) and a few other movies.
In 1955 she worked in film Daku with Shammi kapoor .
In 1959, she acted in Bimal Roy’s film Sujata and then in Tarachand Barjatya’s film Aarti (1962) and for her negative role in this film which received positive reviews and appreciation , she was also awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
After this big achievement, she got several offers for supporting roles.
Her most memorable roles were in film Gumrah गुमराह (1963) which won her a second Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress , Ayee Milan Ki Bela आई मिलन की बेला (1964), Himalay Ki God Mein हिमालय की गोद में 1965), Waqt वक़्त ( 1965), Anupama अनुपमा ( 1966), Phool Aur Patthar फूल और पत्थर 1966) with Dharmendra , Neel Kamal नीलकमल(1968) with Sunil dutt , Chhote Sarkar (1974) and Khubsoorat (1980).
Shashikala usually played either flighty ( चंचल एवं चपल) and feisty ( quarrelsome झगड़ालू) bubbly ( चुलबुली) women or vamps ( खलनायीका) who plotted the downfall of others. Later in her acting career, she played the role of a sister or mother-in-law .
In 80s her acclaimed performances came in films like Phir Wahi Raat, Souten, Sargam.
She performed in supporting roles in more than 100 films and earned name and fame .
Later she has also performed in television serials like Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Sony, Apnaapan for Zee TV , Dil Deke Dekho for Sab TV and Sonpari for Star Plus .
While she was in her early twenties, She had met and married Om Prakash Saigal, who belonged to the Kundan Lal Saigal family and had two daughters.
She won Padma shri award from govt in the year 2007.
She died on 4th, April 2021 (aged 88) at bombay
Mumbai, Maharashtra leaving behind her fascinating acting memories .
