Sajjan Lal Purohit

Sajjan Lal Purohit ( popularly known as Sajjan सज्जन ) was a famous hero turned character actor in about 150 hindi films in a long career from 1949 to 1986 .
Sajan was born on January 15, 1921, at jodhpur in Rajasthan into a Pushkarna hindu Brahmin family. Sajjan graduated from Jaswant college in Jodhpur and wanted to be a lawyer and not an actor but destiny took him to films .
He arrived in Calcutta in 1941 and initially worked as an apprentice in a laboratory . Later he left it and started working as an extra in films such as Masoom (1941) and Chowringhee (1942). Sajjan left Calcutta during Second World War and arrived at bombay where he got a job as an assistant to the famous director Kidar Sharma. At that time, even Raj Kapoor was also an assistant to kidar Sharma. Sajjan also worked as assistant to Gajanan Jagirdar and Vakil Sahib and used to receive a paltry salary.
He was a poet by heart, and displayed his talent when he wrote dialogues for film Meena (1944) and lyrics for films Door Chalen दूर चलें (1946) and Dhanyavad धन्यवाद (1948) and in the latter he also did acting . He also acted in small roles in Prithvi Theatres. After that, he followed it by film Muqaddar which was released in 1950 and worked alongside Nalini Jaywant.
Soon Sajjan got well established in hindi films. In the 1950s and 1960s, he acted as hero or side-hero in films such as Saiyan, Rail Ka Dibba, Bahana, Sheesha, Malkin, Nirmohi, Kasturi, Chand, Mehmaan, Lagan, Girl School, Paridhaan, Poonam , Jhanjhar Jhumroo , Halla-Gulla and many more .
As hero, his last film was Kabuliwala in 1961 . His best known films are Bees Saal Baad बीस साल बाद , Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi चलती का नाम गाड़ी, April Fool अप्रेल फूल, Jhumroo झुमरू , Rail Ka Dibba रेल का डिब्बा, and Johny Mera Naam जानी मेरा नाम .
He last appeared in films Shatru शत्रु with Rajesh Khanna in 1986 and Mera Karam mera Dharam in 1987 .
As a well known actor of more than 150 films, Sajjan also worked in TV serials namely Vikram Aur Betaal विकरम और बैताल ( year 1985 to 1988 ) in which he famously played the role of Betaal. His other Tv series serial was Lena-Dena.
He died on 17 May 2000 at bombay at the age of 79 and left behind his memories as a fine actor of golden period of hindi films .
