Sachin Dev Burman

Sachin Dev Burman

Sachin Dev Burman (also popularly and lovingly called Burman Da and sachin kaka ) was a legendary music composer and singer who skillfully blended his expertise in Indian classical music with a deep understanding of Bengali and northeastern folk music. The music he composed for major films left a lasting influence on Hindi and Bengali cinema.
Burman Da was born on Ist,October, 1906, at Cumilla ( now in bangladesh) into the hindu princely family of Tripura. His father, Nabadwip Chandra Dev Burman ( a poet, painter and sculptor) was the son of the king ( Raja) of Tripura and his mother Rajkumari Nirmala Devi, hailed from the royal family of Manipur .
Burman Da received his first musical training from two of his family’s household helpers—Madhav, who would sing passages from Shri Ramayan to him and from another help who would sing bhatiali songs ( a type of folk music from Bangladesh) with an instrument called dotara (a stringed instrument used in Bengali folk music). Burman’s father besides being a poet, painter and sculptor, was an accomplished sitar player and was his first formal music teacher.
Burman Da passed his intermediate examination in 1922 from Comilla and after graduation from Comilla Victoria College in 1924, he moved to Kolkata to pursue a M.A degree in the University of Calcutta. It was here at Calcutta that he learnt intricacies of music under K.C. Dey, the renowned devotional singer and uncle of the famous singer Manna Dey.
Burman Da later learnt North Indian classical music from masters like Bhishmadev Chatopadhya and others .
He built his house at southend park, calcutta and married his student-the singer Meera Dasgupta on 10.2.1938 that deprived him the royal heritage due to objections as Meera was not from royal background . Their son, Rahul Dev Burman ( RDBurman) who would become a highly renowned music director and singer, was born on 27.6.1939.
Burman Da began his career, as a singer at All India Radio ,Calcutta. His first music record was released by Hindusthan Records and sang several Bengali songs in succession.
What makes his musical style different is the graceful blend of the rusticity of folk music and the elegance of indian classical music. He composed songs that were characterized by fullness, spirit and unconventional approach in both form and content.
He had a unique style of composing film songs. While most of the composers used a harmonium or piano to compose the tune, he would compose tunes using rhythm such as clapping hands .
Burman Da worked as a music director in Calcutta until 1944, after which he shifted to Bombay where he got a major break through in film Do Bhai दो भाई of 1947 with it’s famous song “ Mera sundar sapna beet gaya मेरा सुंदर सपना बीत गया “sung by geeta dutt .
Soon he established himself as an innovative film composer with an exceptional sensitivity to the then demands of the hindi film industry .
His music enhanced the power of the visuals; a clear example is the very famous song “Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hai यह दुनिया अगर मिल भी जाए तो क्या है “ in film Pyaasa प्यासा (1957) performed on-screen by famous actor Guru Dutt.
At Bombay, Burman Da built a special relationship with Navketan films of Chetan and Devanand and did most of his music work for their films in 1950s and 1960s such as Taxi Driver (1954), Paying Guest (1957), Nau do gyara ( 1957) ,kala Pani (1958) , Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967) and Prem pujari (1970 ) .
He also composed music for Guru Dutt’s famous films such as Baazi (1951, Jaal (1952; and Kaagaz ke phool (1959 ) and Bimal Roy’s productions such as Devdas (1955), Sujata (1960) and Bandini (1963) . Film Sujata’s song “ jaltey hain jiskey Liye जलते हैं जिसके लिए “ became very popular.
His other hits were House No. 44 (1955), Funtoosh (1956), and Solva Saal (1958) , ziddi (1964), teen devian( 1965) .
Burman Da’s long professional relation with singer Kishore Kumar yielded countless musically hit songs in films such as Munimji (1955), Nau do gyarah (1957 and Prem pujari .
Burman Da made an effortless transition to the modern era of film music with the hugely popular music and songs of super hit film Aradhana (1969) although he had successfully experimented with Western sounds in films such as Chalti ka naam gaadi (1958) .
His other classic music compositions were in film Prem Pujari (1970), Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Ishq Par Zor Nahin (1970) Sharmeelee (1971) Prem Nagar (1974) and Sagina (1974).
The great achievement of the last years of his life was his music composition for Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film Abhimaan (1973) followed by film Chupke chupke (1975) and Mili (1975).
He loved the city of kolkata and its deep cultural roots. He loved Football and happened to be a Diehard supporter of East Bengal Team.

Sachin Dev Burman was not only a distinguished music composer but was a perfect classical singer himself . In 1932, he had begin singing for the Calcutta radio station. It was there that he became famous for his singing performances in Bengali, Tripuri folk music and light classical music.  It was also in this year that he released his first recording.  Over the next few years he sang and released 131 hit Bengali songs . Sachin Da had immersed himself in music right from his childhood . He together with his domestic helps would move with , Fishermen , Baul singers ,Batiyali singers , Vaishnav singers, farmers , shephards and other village singing troupes  and would sing  and dance  with them and learn their Music and would smoke from their Hookaah . This is how Sachin Da collected a treasure of Folk Tunes . later he learnt Dhrupad and Khayal ख्याल from Shyamcharan Datta , Thumri ठुमरी from Amiya Nath sanyal , Rabindra sangeet from Himangshu Datta and Banarasi style of Thumri from Shyam lal kshetriya . Many of his top film songs have strains of Rabindra sangeet .He also learnt Dhapkirtan धाप कीर्तन , a variety of devotional singing with slow dance movements . He was also a Dhrupad ध्रुपद singer .Burman Da was heavily inspired by folk music and the nature and about it , he once told “ I do my best to give folk it’s due. Besides I make use of folk in songs that are romantic, tender and susceptible to a refined serenity. The basic virtue of folk music is its tendency to mingle joy and sorrow in the same tone and that makes it an asset par excellence to a music composer. A good amount of my achievements are due to folk music and it’s Bhatiali aspect which is something special to me . Bhatiali of a particular area has it’s local gift and colours, it is the song of the rivers besides it is also about love whether of the common peasants or of Radha and Krishn and it’s mood can vary from light romanticisms to philosophic melancholy.”
