Ramayan Tiwari ( popularly known as Tiwari ) was a character actor and did variety of roles several of which were negative ( villain) roles .
He performed in about 136 hindi films in his filmy career from 1941 to 1989.
He was the founder and pioneer of Bhojpuri films .
His exact date of birth is not known but he was born around the year 1917 in a hindu brahmin family at village-maner in patna district and was the first actor in hindi films from bihar .
He was of rebellious nature and was always against the british rule and was actively involved with freedom fighters . Ramayan After studying matriculation from his village school came in contact with the comrades of Azad Hind Fauj. Finally, during the Quit India Movement of 1942, he goodbyed to his village Maner मनैर and boarded a train from Patna with one of his comrade friends. It is said that during the train journey, he got into an argument with a British co-passenger and in anger, he threw him out of the train. At the next station, he changed the train and reached Mumbai directly .
The metropolis Mumbai was like a dream. He had no money in his pocket, but his heart was filled with the spirit of patriotism. Fortunately, he got a small job in Prabhat Studio. He would work here day time and in the night he used to meet people involved in the freedom struggle. After few years the freedom now seemed imminent and tiwari was now content and happy .
Meanwhile one day while shooting was going on for the film Man Mandir मन मंदिर , a character artist didn’t turn up . The director asked him if he could do that small job . Tiwari did it happily and
in that small role, he showed his amazing acting ability and from there on his film journey started.
He continued to work for 7/8 years in films and during this long period his family members
considered him dead and decided to perform his last rites but in the meantime one day a youth of his Maner village saw Ramayan Tiwari in a film. When this news spread ; the whole village rushed to see that film. Ramayan Tiwari’s family was overjoyed. Meanwhile, Ramayan Tiwari suddenly returned to his village. After staying in the village for a few days, he again headed towards Mumbai to do many memorable films.
He had the good fortune of working with big directors of that time like Bimal Roy, Sohrab Modi as well as Raj Kapoor and he emerged as a famous villain in films along with Pran .
His prominent films include Madhumati ,Yehudi, Mahabharat, Do Bigha Zameen , Neelkamal, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Patthar Ke Sanam, Mera saya , Post Box 999, Gopi, kati patang , Rampur Ka Laxman , Dushman, kal aaj aur kal , Majboor , Ganga Ki Saugand , amogst others .
Patriot Ramayan Tiwari was also very famous among the politicians of Bihar of that era. Even whenever Jai Prakash Narayan came to Mumbai, he would definitely visit his residence in Sion.
He quite regularly used to help cancer patients coming to Bombay from bihar .
He also had the blessings of the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad and on his insistence he decided to make a film in bhojpuri with financial help from Raj Kapoor who was very close to Ramayan Tiwari.
And then was made the first bhojpuri film named “Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyaari Chadhaibo” गंगा मइया तोहरे पियरी चढ़इबों . All the work of this film making was done under tiwari’s supervision. The film was shot in his own village Maner and all the artists stayed at his house. The film was a hit in bihar and also in places having sizeable bihari population. His next bhojpuri film was “Laagi Nahi Chhute Rama” लागी नहीं छूटे राम which he produced and directed. This film was very successful and a superhit and till date it is in great demand in India and among the Bhojpuri speaking people living all over the world, especially in Mauritius and other countries. This film achieved the distinction of bringing Bhojpuri films into the mainstream of the Indian film industry. It was only the willpower of the visionary Ramayan Tiwari that created the Bhojpuri film industry for the public.
Ramayan Tiwari did not stop here, he introduced his village of Maner to the superstars of that era namely Jitendra and Nanda and got the entire shooting of the Hindi film ‘Dharti Kahe Pukar Ke’ done in his village Maner.
This eminent personality of Hindi and Bhojpuri films, the pioneer of Bhojpuri films and the first film artist of Bihar, died on 9 March 1980 in Mumbai and left behind a rich and immemorial legacy .Today his third generation is active in Bhojpuri film industry. His son Late Bhushan Tiwari also made his own identity in the field of acting and now his grandson Sujit Tiwari is counted as a big producer and financier of Bhojpuri films.
