Raj Mehra

Raj Mehra was a very famous character artist mainly in the roles of a gentle and caring father or a strict and disciplined father or an impressive Police officer and worked in over 300 hindi films for long 45 years from 1948 to 1993 .
He was Born on May 20th, 1913, at Banaras in a domiciled punjabi hindu family and was educated in Banaras and Delhi . He first started his life as a salesman but left it and started as a commentator in All india radio , delhi and soon got a call from BBC, london which he declined due to family reasons . Raj had a very a deep and impressive voice with great dramatic impression , a voice that attracted attention and impressed people and it was his voice apart from acting talent that had been his asset all through in his very successful and long career in hindi films .
His first film was Shikayat शिकायत in 1948 and then onwards he continued to get offers without halt . He became a notable artist after his role as Police Superintendent in Raj kapoor’s film Jis Desh Mein Ganga Bhi Hai जिस देश में गंगा बहतीं है which was greatly admired.
He got the Filmfare Award as the best supporting actor in the film Sharda शारदा in 1958 .
Raj Mehra belonged to that brigade of veteran character actors who were the mainstay of the hindi film industry and at times he used to work in 6/7 films together .
His last film was Aasoo Bane Angaarey (1993) and he died in the same year at the age of 80 to be remembered for a long time for his voice, varied roles and acting talent .
