Nana Palsikar

Nana Palsikar was a character actor in hindi movies mainly performing as a father and in some films as a magistrate or a judge . He worked from the year 1935 to 1984 for a long 50 years and acted in over 80 films .
Nana Palsikar was born on 20th, may, 1908 in bombay .
His debut film was Dhurandar धुरंधर 1935 followed by Kangan and Durga (1939) and Bahurani (1940).
Thereafter after a long gap he appeared in Bimal Roy’s superhit film Do Bigha Zamin दो बीघा ज़मीन 1953 in which he played the role of Dhangu Maheto as father of Balraj Sahni .The film was a major success and won several national and international honours.
This powerful film was followed with his supporting roles in other successful films of this decade namely , Shantaram’s Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Bimal Roy’s Devdas, Raj Kapoor’s Shree 420, Sombhu Mitra’s Jagte Raho and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anari.
In 1960, Palshikar appeared in B.R.Chopra’s film Kanoon, superbly acting the role of an innocent petty thief . His performance earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In a review in the year 2009, it was noted: “the star of the second half in the film was Nana Palshikar giving superb and commanding performance “.
In the same year his role as Tau ताऊ in Raj kapoor’s film Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai (1960) was much appreciated.
In 1963, Palshikar appeared in social film Shehar Aur Sapna शहर और सपना depicting the struggle of pavement dwellers in the backdrop of on going
industrialisation. The film, received the President’s Gold Medal Award and the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Palshikar’s performance in the film as Johnny earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor .
Following this ; he gave memorable performance in film Maya 1966 and in film Guru of 1969 .
In his films of 1970s and early eighties he continued to play father figures or as a judge .
His last film was Kanoon Kya kare ga क़ानून कया करे गा .
Nana Palsikar died on 1 June 1984 at Bombay at the age of 77.
He will be remembered for his memorable roles in several hit movies .
