Mohammed Umar Mukri
Mohammed Umar Mukri ( popularly known as Mukri ) was a comedy actor during the golden period of hindi cinema .
He was born on 5th, January, 1922 at a place called uran near present day Nai Mumbai in a konkani muslim family .
Mukri who used to act as a quazi ( निकाह, ब्याह पढ़वाने वाला) , started his film career with the film Pratima along with actor and his school mate Dilip Kumar in 1945.
Thereafter in his career of 50 years, he acted in over 600 films as a comedian in small roles .
Mukri, with his toothless smile, short height and good comic timing amused the audiences for a long time , though he was almost a stereotype. His notable films are Mother India (1957), Sharabi (1984), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Laawaris (1981), Bombay to Goa (1972), Gopi (1970), Kohinoor (1960) and several more.
Munchhey ho to Nathu Lal jaisi varna na ho मूंछें हो तो नत्थूलाल जैसी वरना ना हों ; this very popular dialogue frequently spoken by Amitabh Bachchan in the film Sharabi are fresh in the minds of audiences and this famous Nathulal was none else but four feet tall , chubby and gol matol Mukri who used to bring smile to the lips of audience just with his appearance and half understood dialogues in his own typical style and voice .
Mukri and his wife Mumtaz had two daughters and three sons and he died in Mumbai on 4 September 2000 at the age of 78, at Lilavati Hospital. His lifelong friend and schoolmate actor Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu were present by his deathbed .
