Johny Walker
Johny walker was one of the earliest and most remembered comedy actor of hindi films during its golden era and he knew how to make the public laugh .
He was born as Badruddin Jamaluddin kazi on 24.3.1924 or 10.11.1926 at Indore to his father who was a mill worker with 12 children.
Johny in his career from 1951 to 1997 worked in about 300 films and earned name and fame .
He was not a trained actor. He used to work as a bus conductor in Bombay and was spotted by actor Balraj Sahni when johny was entertaining a few passengers and children with his comic performance as a drunkard. Sahni who was then writing story for film Baazi (1951) ; introduced johny to gurudutt who liked his performance and engaged him for his first film Baazi of 1951 in which Johny performed exceptionally well . That’s how johny’s humble film journey began before rising as comedy king alongside his contemporary comedy actors Mehmood and Rajendra nath .
He developed a good chemistry with Gurudutt who enrolled him for all his future films and also gave him the screen name of Johny walker , a favourite scotch whiskey brand of gurudutt , as johny walker generally used to act as a drunkard character in films and with his drunken antics he would made everyone laugh . Johny now became the sole bread earner for his large family .
It is creditable that though Johny normally worked as a drunk comedian in his films but in his real life he never touched alcohal .
Johny was given good training by Gurudutt while he performed in his films and that is how he established himself as a good , famous and entertaining comedy man on silver screen .
Johny gave his best performance in films like Madhumati , Shikar , Mere Mehboob, CID , Pyassa , chowdhanvi kaa chand , Chori Chori all of which together got him the status of a star .
Johny was known for his pencil-thin moustache, squeaky voice and classic antics though it all made him somewhat stereotype. He won the hearts of the audience playing as a drunken side kick of the hero in films like Mr & Mrs 55 ( 1955) , C.I.D in 1956 and Kaagaz key Phool in 1959 .
His hey days were in 1950s and 1960s when film distributors were prepared to pay extra if a role for johny was created in the films to cash on his popularity with audiences and some songs used to be specially composed to fit in his role .
His career suffered a temporary set back with the untimely demise of Gurudutt as the latter as his mentor and friend used to give him a sizeable role in his films and for that at times , Guru Dutt would often rewrite his film’s scripts to create a role for him .
His career took a downhill in 1980s as he was unwilling to adopt to the down graded cruder form of comedy that emerged in this era .
Johnny Walker himself was quite happy with his role and work in Baldev Raj Chopra’s film Naya Daur (1957), Chetan Anand’s film taxi Driver (1954) and Bimal Roy’s film Madhumati (1958).
He also produced and directed film Pahunche Huwey Log in 1985 .
His last film came after a gap of 14 years when he acted in film Chachi 420 in 1997 but again with a bottle in his hand . During this intervening period, he founded and ran a successful business of precious and semi-precious stones .
Johny walker won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award twice for his role in film Madhumati and in film Shikar .
Johny met actress Noor Jehan on the sets of film This or That in 1954 and fell in love with her and they got married in 1955
and the couple had 6 children.
This famous comedy actor died on 29th, July 2003 at Bombay leaving behind his memories of super fine comedy performances .
