Jankidas Mehra
Jankidas Mehra ( popularly known as Janaki das ) acted in hindi films as a character actor cum comedian and was active from the year 1941 to 1998 almost for 57 years .
He was born at Lahore in the year 1910 in a punjabi hindu family.
He started his cinema career in film Khajanchi ख़ज़ांची in 1941 as a news reporter and thereafter after a gap of five years , he acted in record 1000 films though his roles , barring a few films, used to be short and limited but enough for the audience to laugh and enjoy.
He was also the first production designer in the Indian film industry and had designed several films including Pathar aur Payal and Warrant and in his this capacity he was responsible for the founding of Madhubala’s role in Sohrab Modi’s film Daulat in 1947, Meena Kumari in film Nanabhai Bhatt’s Hamara Ghar and Mala Sinha in film Hamlet, produced and directed by Kishore Sahu.
Jankidas was also a renowned cycling expert and the only Indian to have broken the world record in cycling between 1934 to 1942 and is credited for founding the Cycling Federation of India along with Sohrab Bhoot .
Jankidas also wrote books on the film industry including popular book titled ‘My misadventures in filmland and Acting for beginners’ .
In May 1996, he received the lifetime achievement award instituted by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association.
He died on 18.6.2003 at his mumbai residence at the age of 93 and survived by two sons and two daughters .
