Gajanan Jagirdar
Gajanan Jagirdar was a fine actor , screenwriter and director of hindi and
Marathi films from 1934 to 1989 for almost 55 years .
He was born on 2 April 1907 in Amravati city ( Maharashtra) in a marathi hindu family and since childhood had fancy for films and cinema .
After education , he first worked as a teacher in a govt school but soon left it and joined Prabhat film company as a translator from marathi to hindi in the year 1932 and stayed put for almost three decades with them .
In just two years time he got trained in all aspects of cinema making and in 1934 became a full-fledged film director with film Sinhasan सिंहासन 1934) . In his career he directed ten movies of which notable were :-
Honhar (1936)
Charnon Ki Dasi (1941)
Vasantsena (1942 )
Ramshastri (1944 Marathi)
Jail Yatra (1947)
Vijayanta (1961, Marathi)
He also acted in about 135 hindi and Marathi films in a variety of roles as a father , uncle, judge, police officer , public prosecutor, jailor , seth , guruji, doctor , teacher etc .
His last film was Pyase Nain (1989) in which he acted as a Senior Police Inspector .
His superb role as Ramshastri in film also named as Ramshastri ( 1944) won him immense appreciation and popularity and also won him the BFJA award as the best actor and best film of the year 1944.
He was also appointed the first director (then principal) of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Pune in 1960.
Gajanan Jagirdar was awarded the best actor award for his role as a poet Parshuram in the film “Shahir Parshuram “ by Government of
Maharashtra in 1962. The BFJA ( Bengal journalists Association ) bestowed upon him the best actor award for his performance in the film Padosi पड़ोसी(1941 ) .
He died on 13 August 1988 at his residence in Bombay at the age of 81 .
