Dulari Devi was a character actress in hindi films who later in life played the role of a passionate and loving mother and acted in about 135 films in different roles but most of them were of a mother .
Dulari Devi was born on 18 April 1928 in Nagpur, in a Brahmin family originally from the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. Her real name was Ambika gautam but her nick name was Rajdulari and later on in films she came to be known as Dulari Devi .
After her father’s illness, Dulari devi had to look for work and being good in acting got a break in film Bahen बहन (1941) followed by Apna Paraya अपना पराया1943, Hamari Baat हमारी बात 1947, Albela अलबेला 1951, Jeewan Jyoti जीवन ज्योति 1953, Devdas देवदास 1955 , Paying guest पेइंगेसट 1957 .
She in her long career of 60 years worked in 135 films.
Her most notable role was in Jeevan Jyoti (1953). Her other important roles were in Pati Seva, Rangeen Kahani (1945) and some Gujarati films, Chundi ane Chokha (1957), Gunsundari (1948), Mangal Fera (1948).
Her other prominent films are Aankh ka Taara, Akhri Daku, Darinda, Ahuti, Naastik, Dillagi , Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Dil Diya Dard Liya 1966 , Anupama
1966 , Aaye Din Bahar Key and Teesri Kasam (1966) .
She regularly played the mother role in the late 1960s and through the late 1970s. Her noteworthy roles during this period were in films which include Padosan पड़ोसन 1968 , Aya Sawan Jhoom key आया सावन झूम के 1969 , Aradhana आराधना 1969, Ganwaar गंवार 1970 , Johny Mera Naam जानी मेरा नाम 1970 , Aan Milo Sajna आन मिलो सजना 1971, Lal Patthar लाल पत्थर 1972, Mera Gaon Mera desh मेरा गाँव मेरा देस 1971 and famous film Deewaar दिवार of 1975 among others.
Her last film appearance was in Ziddi ज़िद्दी ( 1997) directed by Guddu Dhanoa.
Dular devi had married sound recordist J. B. Jagtap in 1952 and took a break from acting for nine years. Her career in films did not come between her family and professional commitments .
She retired from acting in late 1980s and lived a quiet life thereafter.
She died on 18.01.2013 in Pune at the aged of 84. She had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and was bedridden for over two years before death .
Film enthusiasts will always remember her for her passionate roles in hindi films .
