Dilip kumar along with contemporaries Raj kapoor , Devanand and Rajendra kumar are considered the best heroes of the golden period of hindi cinema .Dilip Kumar ( birth name Muhammad Yusuf Khan ) was born on 11 December 1922, in a muslim family at Peshawar ( now in Pakistan) . They were 12 brothers and sisters .In 1940, his father , a fruit seller , moved to Pune and set up a dry fruit supply shop and during 1947 partition , the family did not go back to Pakistan .Khan’s career started with film jwar Bhatta ( 1944) and he took the new stage name of dilip kumar . His first film flopped including his next several movies before giving two hit films Shaheed and Mela in 1948 . The 1950s and 1960s were Kumar’s most successful decades with several box office hits such as Jogan (1950), Babul (1950), Deedar (1951), Tarana (1951), Daag (1952), Aan (1952), Uran Khatola (1955), Insaniyat (1955), Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Yahudi (1958), Madhumati (1958) , Paigham (1959), Naya Daur (1957), Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Gunga Jumna (1961), leader (1964) , Dil Diya Dard Liya (1967), Ram aur Shyam (1967) .The period of 1970s was quite bad for him as he acted only in a few films ( Sagina Mahato, bairrag , gopi ) all of which flopped except film Gopi .The rise of actors like Dharmendra , Rajesh Khanna, jitendra , Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar had led to Kumar losing film offers from 1970 to 1980. He took a five-year recess from films from 1976 to 1981 in absence of offers . In 1981, Dilip kr returned to films, reinventing himself in elderly character roles. His comeback film was hit movie Kranti of Manoj kumar followed by further hits like Vidhaata (1982), Shakti (1982), Duniya (1984), etcin 1991, Kumar starred alongside fellow veteran actor Raaj Kumar in hit film Saudagar. In 1998, dilip Kumar acted in his Qila which flopped . In a career spanning over five decades, dilip Kumar worked in 57 films in a variety of roles and earned name and fame .In  his career, Kumar received eight Filmfare Awards for Best Actor . The Government honoured Kumar with the Padma Bhushan in 1991, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. The Government of Pakistan conferred Kumar with the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award in Pakistan, in 1998 as he was a muslim born in Peshawar ( pakistan) .In 1966, Kumar had married actress Saira Banu who was 22 years younger than him. He later married Hyderabadi  Asma Rahman, as second wife but divorced in 1983 . Saira Banu and he lived in Bandra childless .Kumar died at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, on 7 July 2021 , aged 98, due to age related problems. His fans will remember him for a long long time.
