Bharat Bhushan

Bharat Bhushan

Bharat Bhushan is well remembered and famous for his about a dozen hit films in which he played the lead role during 1950s and early 1960s though his first movie was chitrlekha चित्रलेखा of 1941 .
Bharat Bhushan was born as Bharat Gupta on 14th,June ,1920 in a Vaishya hindu family at Meerut . His father, Raibahadur Motilal , was the government pleader and judge of high court of Ellahabad but he lost his mother when he was just two years old. He did his graduation from Dharam Samaj College, Aligarh. His elder brother – Ramesh Chandra Gupta was film producer and also a high court judge, who owned the Ideal Studio at Lucknow.
After finishing his education, Bharat decided to go for acting in films though his father was against it . In search of film roles he proceeded to calcutta and later permanently shifted to Bombay .
His first wife Sarla died soon after delivering her second child . The couple had two daughters namely Anuradha and Aparajita. In 1967, he married actress Ratna, his co-star in the film Barsaat Ki Raat .
His debut film was Chitralekha ( 1941) in which he performed a supporting role followed by 1942 film Bhakta Kabir and film Bhaichara भाईचारा of 1943 .
However he had to struggle hard and wait for a long time before he became a well known artist in kidar Sharma’s directed successful film Suhaag Raat (1948) in which he played the hero’s role along side geeta bali and begum para .
He thereafter got offers for medium-budget films notably Udhar 1949 and Ankhen in 1950 but followed by three superhit movies namely Baiju Bawra बैजू बावरा , Anand Math आनन्द मठ and Bimal Roy’s first film – Maa माँ all in 1952 which made him a star .
Though he may not have been a super star but he was the fittest and perfect actor to perform the role of a sensitive and suffering poet or a musician in several hit musical films in the fifties and sixties.
It is difficult to imagine any other actor in place of Bhushan’s roles in his superhit movies like Baiju Bawra 1952, Mirza Ghalib 1954 ( for which he won best actor film fare award ) , Basant Bahar 1956, Phagun 1958, Kavi Kalidas 1959 , Barsaat Ki Raat 1962 and Sangeet Samraat Tansen 1964 .
In these movies he portrayed as an artiste who was at odds with a cruel world but still retained a song on his lips. Thus his films were often based on tragedies .
His film Baiju Bawra became a golden jubilee hit and established himself and Meena Kumari as stars . It also crystallised Bhushan’s image as an actor of high substance. In film Baiju Bawra, Bhushan played the perfect role of a gifted but obsessed musician propelled by twin compulsions — a desire to extract revenge on court musician Tansen, which he achieves through his music and a deep love for his village sweetheart प्रेमिका Gauri.
In the then age of film heroes with slicked back hairs ; Bhushan’s unruly hairs and simple looks caught the attention of his audience particularly the women . His ability to convey anguish went down well with the masses.
Bharat again delivered a super hit film Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1953) for which he was rewarded the Filmfare Best Actor Award.
From 1970s onwards , Bharat’ popularity started declining, he lost his stardom and was offered only small roles in about 50 films .
He wrote scripts and stories for films Barsat Ki Raat, Nayi Umar Ki Nayi Fasal, Basant Bahar, Dooj Ka Chand ( also it’s producer) etc.
Bhushan being a keen reader , had a fine and large collection of books which he had to sell off like his cars and bungalow ( his bungalow “Ashirwad “ to Rajendra kumar who in turn sold it to Rajesh khanna ) in bad times, after he turned co-producer at the instance of his brother and lost money as only a few of his movies were successful while rest all flopped and amidst this financial troubles he died on 27,January,1992 at bombay at the age of 71.
According to his daughter Aparajita, after selling his bungalow and cars , Bharat Bhushan bought a flat in Mumbai and spent his last days in it. He had started falling ill and spent his last days in great financial difficulties, although he did not beg from anyone even in bad times and used to earn his living by doing small jobs .
However, he still commands admiration , remembrance and love by people who are now in their late 50s for the great movies and great songs that he gave in spite of personal tragedies and stiff competition from his contemporaries and is considered as one of the greatest stars and legends of Hindi cinema’s golden period .
