Abhi Bhattacharya
Abhi Bhattacharya was yet another famous and distinguished artist known for sober voice and very natural talented acting in the lead or side roles in hindi and Bengali films .
Abhi Bhattacharya was born on 20th, November 1921 in a village near Rajshahi ( now in Bangladesh) in a hindu brahmin family. He lost his mother at the age of seven. After his father remarried, young Abhi was sent to Gaya ( bihar) to live with his effluent maternal uncle मामाजी . He did well in school and sports and his Mami inculcated in him the love for drama, music and poetry . Gradually he developed a passion for films. After graduation, he first took up a job at an American air base but was always interested in acting and music .
His film career commenced when he passed screen test in response to an advertisement of Bombay Talkies and was selected as a hero in film Noukadubi based on a novel by Rabindra nath Tagore .
He subsequently shifted to Calcutta to act in the film yatrik 1952 .
In 1950s and in 1960s, Abhi Bhattacharya was quite sought after with film offers and he successfully acted opposite heroines like Madhubala, Mala Sinha, Geeta Bali and Madhabi Mukherjee .
He is most remembered for his roles in films such as Yatrik (1952), Jagriti (1954), Anuradha (1960), Subarnarekha (1965) and Amanush 1975. In his four decade long acting career he performed in more than 150 hindi and 21 bengali films and worked with eminent film directors such as Ritwik Ghatak, Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy and Satyen Bose.
He won Filmfare award (1956) for his role as the Best Supporting actor in the film Jagriti जागर्ति.
He worked with the legendary actor Mahanayak Uttam Kumar in 1975 iconic film Amanush directed and produced by Shakti Samanta.
Because of his facial beauty and physical structure, he successfully played the role of Lord Vishnuji in many religious films such as Tulsi Vivah, Vishnu Puran, Hari Darshan, Kisan Aur Bhagwan and as Krishnji in film Mahabharat .
In his Later life around 1971, he gradually began to focus more on spirituality through his association with Dadaji
(Guru Shri Amiya Roy Chowdhury ) and continued his spiritualism till his death .
He had married fellow actress Pranati Ghosh but the marriage was not a happy one. Bhattacharya faced adversities in life without showing any bitterness and was known as a saintly artiste who was often deceived by the film fraternity. The promise that he showed as a versatile actor was, perhaps, not fully realised. It could be due to his style of sober acting or disappearance of idealism in cinema or his lack of ambition . Whatever it be, in real life he turned out to be larger than a film hero. Unfortunately most people other than those who had seen his films have forgotten him .
This highly talented and a gentleman actor died on 11 August 1993 at bombay at the age of 71 .
