Jagdish Raj
Actor jagdish Raj ( birth name Jagdish Raj Khurana) was a famous character actor who mainly did the job of a police inspector in hindi movies in his long active career from 1954 to 1997 .
Jagdish Raj was born in the year 1928 in a punjabi hindu family at Sargoda , now in Pakistan.
Although Jagdish Raj sometimes played a villain and a few times as a judge and doctor but he is better known as the police Inspector of Bollywood .
In movies made from 1965 to 1990 , a most common sentence or line in crime movies used to be :-
“The police have surrounded you from all sides, now you have no way to escape. Surrender yourself to the police.”
This line was one of the most widely used lines in Bollywood films being echoed in almost every second or third film made between the 65s and 80s, because in those days crime based films were in vogue and hence the necessity of police in films and invariably this line used to be from actor Jagdish Raj – the police officer of bollywood.
Be it Dev Anand’s ‘CID’ or ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Don’ or ‘Deewar’, Jagdish Raj was seen everywhere in police uniform and acting as a police inspector.
He was the real hero of the then real police force who were so attached to the actor that whenever the traffic police saw him in his car on the road, they used to salute him. He was never challaned, even if he broke the traffic rules by mistake.
And though his name didn’t figure in the VVIP list, he was never checked by the police men at the airports. He commanded so much popularity and respect , reason being that in his role as a police officer in films , he would always portray as an honest and an upright officer not demanding graft, not using foul language with filmy villains or gundas nor applying any third degree on them .
Jagdish Raj acted in about 250 films out of which in 144 he acted as police inspector and holds the Guinness World Record for casting as a police officer in largest number of movies . He also holds the Limca Book of Records for Most memorable policeman ever in films
Some of his prominent movies from 1955 to 1980 are separately appended .
